Structure fire in house condemned from Hurricane Ida

Thursday, March 17, 2022

At 7:38pm on Sunday February 7th, 2022, Wilmington Fire Department units were dispatched to 1017 E. 13th Street for a residential structure fire.  Battalion Chief - District 1 arrived on scene to a two-story middle of the row residential with fire showing from the front of the home and a large amount of smoke venting from the rear of the structure and assumed Command.  Engine 1 deployed hose lines through the front of the home with Engine 3 deploying a backup line for firefighter safety and began an aggressive fire attack.  Squad 4 and Ladder 1 began an immediate search for civilians in the fire building and residential units on both sides of the affected home.  Engine 5 and Ladder 2 conducted searches in the exposure buildings to the left and right of the fire building.  While searches found no victims, several units had missing floors and walls due to renovations, allowing smoke to penetrate into the structures.  The fire was contained to the first floor of 1017 E. 13th street, but five additional homes were damaged by smoke from the fire.  Command received reports from civilians and Wilmington Police on scene that a possible subject from 1017 E. 13th Street was missing, primary and secondary searches proved negative and all exposures were negative as well.  One firefighter was injured on scene and transported to the hospital with minor burns to the wrist area, and has since been treated and released from the hospital.  The incident was placed under control and units cleared the scene at 8:53pm.
